Fifty-one children. Each unique and each born with Down syndrome. In this project in collaboration with the non-profit organisation MIEX, I captured them on film. This led to ‘Emile – The beauty of imperfection’: a book of poignant black and white photographic portraits. The exhibition with the same name was launched in St Nicholas’ Church in Ghent in March 2016 and is now travelling to various locations both in Belgium and abroad. The photographer Lieve Blancquaert is the artistic patron of the project.
I met a woman with a scar on her face, caused by the removal of a birthmark. I found this fascinating. When you look different from the norm, how do you find your place in this world? How does it affect your self-image and identity? The search led me to ‘Skin’, a series of images of children with port-wine stains on their faces and bodies. Capricious and natural watercolours on a canvas of human skin.
